How to thaw frozen pipes could just be the first question in the mind of a homeowner who have just found out that their pipes have been frozen by the cold winter.

As a homeowner, there are several things to try before calling for professional help.

“Don’t panic. Just because they’re frozen doesn’t mean they’ve already burst. Here’s what you can do: (1) If you turn on your faucets and nothing comes out, leave the faucets turned on and call a plumber; (2) If your house or basement is flooding, turn off the water valve and immediately call 911; (3) Do not touch or use electrical appliances in areas of standing water due to electrocution concerns.”

Dealing with the inconvenience of Frozen Pipes

Safeco offered more tips on thawing frozen pipes.

“If it’s a single pipe, and you can reach the frozen section, try using a hair dryer, heating pad or portable space heater – just never leave it running unattended. Keep the faucet open and work up and down the pipe, starting at the faucet and working backward to the frozen section. Apply heat until full water pressure returns, then reduce the flow to a trickle until the cold snap ends.”

Moving Forward

Once a homeowner has already resolved the frozen pipe problem, he should already take preventive measures in order to avoid a recurrence of the incident.

The Red Cross offered some steps to take after a freezing pipe incident.

“Future Protection: Consider relocating exposed pipes to provide increased protection from Freezing; Pipes can be relocated by a professional if the home is remodeled; Add insulation to attics, basements and crawl spaces. Insulation will maintain higher temperatures in these areas; for more information, please contact a licensed plumber or building professional.”
